Dear EamonX1,
This will take an easy process. I will give you step by step details on how to transfer all your hard drive information from your old inspiron 4000 to the new laptop
First of all, we will need to buy one hard drive enclosure or USB adapter. This will help us to connect your old hard drive with the new laptop so you will be able to copy all what you need from there.
Inspiron 4000 laptops have an IDE Hard drive thus we will need to buy an IDE enclosure for it. Here are some links for an IDE enclosure that you can buy or you can get them from any computer store just by asking for a (2.5" IDE Had drive external USB enclosure).
This is a store that offer a cheap one: If you are based in UK: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=25577&source=googleps
If you are based in USA: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817193033
Second:
After getting the enclosure, we will need to remove the hard drive from the old laptop and this process need a small (PHILIPS "cross head" screwdriver) . Attached Below there is a pdf guide that will tell you by pictures how to remove the hard drive from the inspiron 4000 laptop.
Third:
Connect the Hard drive to the enclosure. This should be an easy process and all what you need is to connect the pins of the hard disk and fit them in the enclosure. This process should be done as the following picture

Finally, You will connect the USB of the enclosure to your new laptop and you will find the Old hard drives of the laptop appearing in my computer. You can copy paste all th data that you need from The drives appearing on your old laptop to the Drive of the new laptop.
Please feel free to ask any other questions if required and I will respond promptly
Best Regards, Hidden Ox
