One of the computers in my network shows 500mb on a  network drive but it is 40GB with plenty of room for storage.   All the other computers, some running 2000 and some XP show the HD as 40 GB.  The computer is running XP with similar setup as other XP computers in the network.

Are disk quota's enabled?  Quotas will make the computer (or rather user) looking at the drive see the drive is only as large as their quota.  If you enable quotas and set an entry for one user and no entries for other users, then you could have what you describe.
