Question : Problem: Via bus master IDE driver?

When i installed win xp
im getting this error message that i should install
my VIA bus master IDE driver.
My question is to what kind of device is my pc reffering.
Are those drivers for the motherboard or the HD.
I have assus Motherboard and IBM HD 40 gig.

Answer : Problem: Via bus master IDE driver?

The drivers are specifically for the controller that handles your hard drive.  Since this is an XP install, and typically the VIA 4-in-1 drivers are to correct issues with Windows 9X platforms being able to recognize the disc drives attached to the IDE channels on your motherboard.  Windows XP should have "built-in" support for these devices.

Which ASUS motherboard?  Are you actually installing the OS, or are you running the compatibility checking tool prior to installation to see if you can upgrade your system to XP.  A true install of XP should not have any problem with the VIA chipsets.  If you have such problems you are probably not doing a true install and are using the "upgrade".  Personally I do not recommend this.  As a field technician for two major PC vendors and reviewing similar issues I have had with those of a local repair office.  We have found that as with any install, a full format before installation will prevent the problems you are having.
