Question : Problem: Screen goes black before OS boot

My OS won't boot.  My computer has been running fine for more than a year.  I installed Vista more than a month ago and there haven't been any problems.  The other day the screen was just blank.  I tried to restart it and I get the same thing.  When I restart it it first starts up with the video card brand.  Then it shows the MB, CPU, RAM and recognizes the hard drives.  That is all normal.  After that it just goes black.  There is no cursor or beep.  I plugged the hard drive into a different computer and I can read it fine.  I tested each ram stick on its own and they all seem fine.  I installed a different video card and got the same result.  When I put the windows install disk in it gets stuck inspecting the hardware configuration.  Does anyone know what is wrong?

Answer : Problem: Screen goes black before OS boot

Boot the PC using another OS, like knoppix. That should show you whether the PC is fine. Also, you don't mention how you tested the RAM. Use memtest86+ if you haven't used that already. Reset the CMOS to factory or Failsafe Values.
