Question : Problem: Blackberry coverage

 Hi All

Quick query -I had a user who was travelling on a train this morning and said her Blackberry device wasn't receiving any email, however she was able to send text messages and make phonecalls on it. The Battery on the device was fine.

Is there any explanation to this? Does the data use a seperate 'network' than the phone/sms?

Also - she says that she was able to connect her laptop to the WiFI on the train?

Out of interest, does Blackberry coverage work differently to ActiveSync enabled on a mobile device for corporate email?

Any ideas?

Answer : Problem: Blackberry coverage

Hi, the device just had GSM coverage and it was unable to connect to the data network (e.g. GPRS or EDGE). On the standard GSM network it will only allow phone calls and SMS.  In order for a BlackBerry or ActiveSync device to sync email it MUST establish a data connection with the carrier it is connected to (BlackBerry devices then make another connection after that to the RIM relay).  It is common when "roaming" that some other carriers may not offer data services so you may have to go to Options > Mobile Network and manually try a few networks.
