Question : Problem: backup exec will not compress backups

We have SBS 2003 with Backup Exec for SBS Version 10.
DAT 72 gb tape drive from Dell
Dat 72 tapes.

The backup was set to Hardware compression if available, then software.
It has since been changed to Hardware compression only.

New firmware was installed yesterday.

The file server has about 60 gb uncompressed.  No compression.

The drive will not backup more that 40 gb.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
