Question : Problem: Iphone & sending of emails through exchange

HI I have a client who has an SBS2003 server with an Iphone (though using an orange SIM card, unlocked, not the official O2 sim card as provided)
I have configured the phone to retreive emails, but can't send through the exchange server. I have put the outgoing server as smtp.orange.net but this fails. (the clients telephony provider)
Am i missing something? Could orange not allow the ability to relay as this phone shouldn't be on the orange network?

Make sure you have the iPhone setup as dictated below for IMAP and SMTP.  The iPhone wants to use port 587 for Secure SMTP sending.

Note that this is the default config, where SSL is being used.  If you turn off this setting, you can use standard IMAP port 143 and SMTP port 25, but this is insecure and not a best practice.  If you turn SSL off for both incoming and outgoing, this puts the ports back to 143 and 25 respectively.  Otherwise you must have ports 993 and 587 open on your router and a valid SSL certificate installed on your server.

There is another option, if you use AT&T EDGE network you can always use their SMTP relay which is CWMX.com.  Enter that as your outgoing SMTP address and there is no need for username and password.  NOTE - this will not work if you use WIFI, only when connected to AT&T EDGE cellular internet.  This seems to work well for many people.
