Question : Problem: Activesync 4.2 and Symantec Corporate Antivirus 8.x issue

Hi,
I am having a series of problems involving connectivity issues with a windows mobile OS version 1.8.10.2 device.

1. Computer System info:
HP Pavilion with AMD Turion 64 Moble Technology ML-34
1.79 GHz, 1.00 Gb of RAM

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

2. Handheld System Info:
T-Mobile MDA
Windows Mobile OS version 1.8.10.2

The following is the sequence of events:
1. Computer and mobile device were operating with no knownb problems initially.
2. Installed Symantic Antivirus Corporate Edition version 8.1.0.825. On reboot received the following error:

wcescomm.exe error.
"The application couldn't be initialized correctly (0xc0000142)"

After some reseach I found this was due to a conflict with Norton AV.

So, I then went to the Symantec website which suggested this fix:

"Upgrade to ActiveSync 3.6, build 2148 or later.
Download and run the Symevent installer.
See the article How to update the Symevent files for more information.
Disable scanning of network drives.
In Symantec System Center or the local Norton AntiVirus interface, open File System Realtime Protection Options.
Locate Drive Types, and uncheck Network.
Disable scanning within compressed files for any manual or scheduled scans that run. If a scheduled scan has run and scanning within compressed files is enabled, you may need to reinstall ActiveSync."

I ran the symevent installer which seemed to install correctly.

The current version of Activesync is 4.2, I was running 4.0 So I tried to install the 4.2 version and would then get this error message:

Windows Installer error
"Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable."

So I could not install an upgrade. I removed version 4.0 and tried again. Still get the same error. I then tried to install version 3.8 which did install, but can not connect to the mobile device.  So, now I'm stuck. I can not connect to the handheld. The wcescomm.exe error is not showing up right now. Also I did go and uncheck the network drive option in Norton. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
