Question : Problem: Motherboard switch with RAID 0

Here's something I'm curious about because I've never done it before, but I am going to need to tonight.  Previously, I was running an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe motherboard with two 36.7GB 10,000 RPM Western Digital SATA hard drives set up in a RAID 0 configuration using the onboard SATA RAID.  The Asus motherboard is going on the fritz, so I'm replacing it tonight with a GigaByte GA-7N400 Pro2 motherboard (which uses the same nForce 2 Ultra 400 chipset).  The GigaByte motherboard also has onboard SATA RAID, and I'm wondernig if I can set up RAID 0 on it without destroying the existing partitions or data.  Let me know if it can be done.  If you need more information on the SATA RAID controller or chipset, visit http://usa.asus.com/ or http://www.giga-byte.com/

Answer : Problem: Motherboard switch with RAID 0

The Asus A7N8X Deluxe uses a Silicon Image SiI3112A SATA controller.
The GigaByte board you are using has the same SiL3112A controller.

I checked the product spec on the SiI3112A. They offer no information about the RAID config being stored on the controller, the hard drive or both.
So you will want to make a backup for sure! Then try to plug your hard drives into the new motherboard on the same channels as the old board. If you are lucky the config is stored on the hard drives and you can migrate easily to the GigaByte.
