Question : Problem: windows 98 audio not working

Hi all,
Couple days ago my son formatted his pc (an imb aptiva running windows 98) and then claimed sound wasn't working so he installed a different audio codec...(audio worked fine before he formatted the comp).
Well, it didn't quite worked so now I'm trying to uninstall it by deleting it from Control Panel \ System \ Device Manager \ Sound, video and games controllers but after I do so, when restarting the pc I don't get the option to choose where to install the new driver from(I was intending to use the win98 cd), the one I've just deleted installs itself over an over again.
And oh, is there any way to find out what the original audio driver name of this comp was? or a compatible one maybe? Im hoping this is just a matter of finding the correct driver...

Answer : Problem: windows 98 audio not working

Alternatively, you can go to the IBM/Lenovo support site here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=HOME-LENOVO#rdt

and do either of the following:

1. Auto-Detect my System - normally requires that you consent to the downloading and installation of a small program (ActiveX Control) that should then give you details of your computer and/or take you to the correct support page

OR, if you know the Model number from a sticker on the computer,

2. Enter the details as follows:
Select your product = Desktops (page refreshes)
Brand = Leave set as "Desktops"
Family = Aptiva (page refreshes)
Type = enter your model number (page refreshes)
Operating System = Windows 98
Click "Continue" - (page refreshes)

Page contains links for all support options.  Click the Driver link for Driver Downloads.

Sometimes, during the production lifecycle, the specification changes, or there may be some differences for the same model produced in different continents and the sound card/chip may be a different make or model, in which case the Everest program mentioned by blue_zee would be an invaluable double-check.

You don't say if this is Windows 98 Firts Edition or Second Edition (SE).  If in doubt, Right-Click on My Computer and choose "Properties".
Windows 98 1st Edition will show 4.10.1998
Windows 98 SE will show 4.10.2222

If you have Win98SE, then you may need to install the Windows 98 Second Edition Audio Update:
