Question : Problem: Find and install a tcp/ip printer on sbs 2003.

Hi, I am on a new network that was previously set up.

There is a HP DesignJet 130NR plotter that was installed previously. It worked when I shared it (directory) on one of the four machines it was installed on. The next day that machines HDD went dead, and now the other 3 users cant access this plotter.  They have it listed but it doesnt work.

I "believe" it was set up locally a long time ago but am not sure. It is going downstairs (cat5) into a switch next to the server, but I cannot find this printer anywhere on the network.

Actually the only printer I can find in the directory is the one I shared.  The other printers are shared (when I check the properties) through standard TCP/IP.

1. How do I find where these printers are shared (name, location, ip)?
2. What part of SBS 2003 is being used here for printer management? TS?
3. How do I add this printer/plotter if I cant find its IP? Location? or see it on the network.

Please advise me on the best path of resolution.

HP Designjet 30 and 130 Printer Series - TCP/IP Network Install

Installing the printer on a Windows TCP/IP network
Installing the printer on a Windows TCP/IP network

   1. Print the information pages of the printer (hold down the Power key and press the OK key four times).
   2. Look at the TCP/IP section of the first page and see whether the printer has an assigned IP address.
NOTE:       Check the Status of the Jetdirect configuration page, which should show the I/O Card Ready.
          * If no IP address is shown or if a default address of 0.0.0.0 or 192.0.0.192 is shown, there is no assigned IP address. Note the hardware address.
          * If an IP address is assigned, the printer is in a Ready state.
NOTE:       Make note of the IP or Hardware address as you will need this information later on.
   3. Insert the HP Designjet 30 & 130 series Printers Software Setup for Windows CD into the computer. If the CD does not autorun, run the SETUP.EXE program in the root directory of the CD.
   4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer. Note the following:
          * When asked how the printer is connected, choose Connected via the network .
          * When asked what Network Setup you require, choose Basic network setup .
          * When asked how the printer will be identified, choose Search from a list of detected printers , and select the printer from the list. If you have more than one HP Designjet printer, use the IP address or hardware address to check that the correct printer has been selected.
          * When asked which Network Configuration Option you want, choose Configure Network Settings for me .
          * When asked what type of installation, choose Typical . A Typical installation meets the needs of most users.
   5. Click Next until you have completed the installation of the printer and HP Designjet System Maintenance tool.
   6. The printer should now be correctly setup and available for use on your network.
