Question : Problem: windows freezing after logging in

after start up i get the login screen on my pc which im running windows xp media edition
on entering my login details it starts to load persnal settings and then freezes with just the background picture and the only thing i can do is open the task manager which shows no cpu usage or programs running. How do i solve this without wiping everything on my hard drive?
