Question : Problem: I have vpn working but cant see network files or shares

Hi all,

I have setup a VPN server and client and i seem to have set it ip right, as i manage to login ok and it says its connected. Problem is i cant view files or network shares.

The equipment i have is
A server running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition
A client running Windows XP Professional ( this is a laptop away from the office)
Router configured to allow PPTP traffic through to my Server.

I have setup a vpn server on Windows 2003 Server Standard edition.
I created the server by going to
Network Connections
new connection
setup a advance connection
accept incoming connections
i have set a user
i have set the ip to the one my ISP gives me

I have setup a vpn client on the Windows XP Pro laptop using the network conenctions new conection wizard, connect to my workplace etc.

I hope that this is enough information for you guys.

Any ideas why i cant view files??

i am looking for a quick response as i am doing a job for a client of mine. :=)

Thanks in advance

Answer : Problem: I have vpn working but cant see network files or shares

Browsing on the network is usually done by WINS and Netbios. To make this work you would need:

* WINS Server set up on the Server
* On the client VPN connection properties, in the Network tab: Enable "Client for Microsoft networks" and in the same place in the Advanced properties of the TCP/IP settings a configured WINS server IP address pointing to your Windows Server's internal IP address.

That should be sufficient to get it working. You don't have to set up DNS to make it work, WINS just serves your purpose.
