Question : Problem: Why does my processor fan always run in high after installing larger HDD and WinXP from OEM disk instead of Sony Recovery CD?

Recently installed larger HDD on my desktop Sony RX-550.  The Sony System Recovery CD would not allow me to successfully partition/format the larger drive.  My research indicates this may be because the Recovery CD only supports the hardware originally installed by Sony.  To work around this I used an OEM WinXP CD and configured the new HDD without a hitch.

Now the issue:  The processor fan runs at its highest speed all the time, even when the processor utilization is about 2%, or running nothing but the desktop after startup.  I have swapped the drives -- new to old to new -- to check the operation of the fan, and with the old OEM drive and OEM system the fan speed drops back to normal.   This tells me the processor and fan are okay.

Is this an issue caused by the needs of the larger HDD or did I miss installing a driver or controller for the processor/fan by not using Sony's Recovery CD?  If so, what component am I looking for and is there a way to extract it from the Recovery CD?  Or is there a way to overcome the disk setup issue that I have experienced with the Recovery CD?

I would look into Sony's power management software for your particular model.
Here's a fan control utility from sony's site for the rx550

look through the other drivers on the page to see if you are missing anything.
