Question : Problem: dead motherboard

I just got my XFX 680i motherboard back after being out a month for RMA. I was told their were no issues with the board and it was sent back.

I had everything working fine for 3 months and was doing a large data transfer over my LAN and woke to a dead machine. I have the 680i, Intel Q6600, 4GB DDR2 800MHZ, 2 BFG8500GT 512MB, WD 250GB SATA, 450W PS, Pioneer DVD burner. I was running Vista home premium 64bit.

I've googled this issue and seems somewhat common with this mobo. I didn't get anything from tech suppt. just that it tested fine. I know my PS is good I have tested in other cases and it works. I have read some forums that suggest a larger PS may be in order. I agree with that but the motherboard specs say all you need is 350W for one GPU and minimum of 500W for 2 GPUs. I cant get it to boot with one GPU, I am out of ideas and was hoping someone had this same issue.

FYI: I have one purple LED that lights up other than that no fans, no beeps, no video.

Answer : Problem: dead motherboard

Thanks for the info, took me till 4 am but I transferred everything to another case and "viola" it worked. Scratched my head a little and moved everything back only to have the same result. I took 4 motherboard screws out towards the center of the board and it finally worked in my new case.

Looks like it was shorting to the frame of my case.

FYI: I am using a XION II XON-10 case.

Here's a picture of the inside of the case. I don't care for the mounts and I know a lot of manufacturers are going to the recessed mounts instead of the old school brass screw in mounts.
