Question : Problem: Concept on 'Thin Provisioning'

Could someone please explain what Thin Provisioning exactly is / means?
I am an admin and we have an ESX 3.5 server on a blade server with dell equallogic SAN providing the space, and id like to learn more about strategies with my VMs and its storage.
