Question : Problem: How to print from laptop to printer wirelessly
|
|
Hi,
I have only a laptop which is connected to a docking station via usb. I have a linksys lan/wireless router. The router is connected to the docking station via cat5 and the printer is connected to the docking station via usb.
Can I connect the printer to the router using usb to ethernet adapter so that I can print wireless when in a different room. Currently I cannot print wirelessly when the printer is connected to the docking station which I thought that I would be able as the docking station is connected to the router.
Thanks

You need a USB print server. There are many models available, see for example:

You plug your printer into the print server, which in turn connects to your network via a cat-5 cable. There are also wireless print servers, such as:

One caveat: some USB printers do not take kindly to being networked. If other PCs can use your printer while your laptop is docked you should be OK. If they can't, you can assume a print server won't work either.
