Question : Problem: Static IP Addresses with Apple Airport Extreme
|
|
I would like to assign a static IP address to my VMWare Windows installation. For reasons I can't imagine, Mac OS seems to have set things up so that you're supposed to "pull" the static IP address from the client by changing the network settings on the computer itself. This is fine for the Mac, but you can't do that with the windows connection as far as I know. Is there a command line utility or an http interface to the Airport base station that exposes more configuration options?

It's not clear exactly what you are trying to do. There are two main methods for getting static ip addresses. The first is to statically assign an IP address on the client computer from a different range to that assigned via DHCP.
If your DHCP server assigns IP addresses in the range 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.200, you simply pick one of the other IP addresses and configure your machine to use that.
Eg, you set your VMWare windows installation to use 192.168.1.50, with appropriate DNS and gateway addresses.
The other way is to set your DHCP server up so that it reserves an IP address for a particular mac address, and always assigns that mac address the same IP address.
To setup port mapping on an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device. Internet > DHCP tab o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations. o Description: o Reserve address by: MAC Address o Click Continue. o MAC Address: o IPv4 Address: o Click Done.
Cheers,
Joel
