Question : Problem: ipod classic not recognized by itunes, what is fix?

My fiend has a 80G Ipod Classic that I tunes suddenly refused to recobnize.  States that it is corrupted, but if he wants to reformat it it must be done through itunes which doesn't allow it to connect.  Suggestions?

Eventually, he exchanged it for a new Ipod, smething was wrong with the hard drive of that unit.
