Question : Problem: What does a sound card really do?

Just like information on what a sound card actually does?  How is it different from the audio ports already installed on the mobo?

Answer : Problem: What does a sound card really do?

The audio ports installed on the motherboard are considered an integrated sound card.  Generally this provides for basic audio.  You'll find many purist do not like integrated sound, video, or network cards.

A separate sound card is typically more feature rich and provides for better audio quality.  There are many options available, such as cards with RCA connectors and digital audio output.  A separate sound card is useful for game playing, watching videos or listening to music, and for video and audio editing.

If you are satisifed with your computer's audio performance then a separate sound card is not necessary.
