Question : Problem: Cat5e / Cat6 cable speed question
|
|
I think i must not understand network wireing as much as I thought i did..I just added to our network and the guy that ran our cable ran Cat5e cable on accident after i had told him i wanted Cat6. It wasnt not terribly important so i let it go at cat5e but I had already ordered the network switch for this area. I had ordered a Dlink 10/100/1000 24 port switch unmanaged. just a basic gigabite switch. I called Dlink up and asked if that would be a problem with cat5 and they said it would automaticly set itself to the correct speed for what was available. so yesterday i installed all my comptuers and the switch and it all is saying they are running at a gigabit. (the network card are gigabit as well)
so can cat5 run gigabit speed, I thought that is what Cat6 was for. if not what are the other advantages for cat6? also am i going to have problems running this speed on the cat5? i just dont want to make more problems for myself!
Thank You

Cat 5e is rated for gigabit, Cat 5 isn't. Cat 6 is capable of even highe speeds 10Gigabit over cat 6 is in the works.
