Question : Problem: Laptop hard drive to Desktop.
I spilled a drink on my laptop and my system board and power were damaged to the point where is was smarter to buy a new computer. This time I am buying a desktop; now the question...
How do I connect my laptop hard drive (which I saved from the laptop) to a desktop? I have heard somethings about IDE converters... I do not understand how the desktop will access the laptop hard drive if the laptop hard drive was both a 'C' and 'D' partitioned drive and my desktop will be a 'C' drive. I just want to get certain MS Word documents and Digital camera pictures. I am sure this is an easy question for most, but I am at a loss and
Please help and go slow :)
Answer : Problem: Laptop hard drive to Desktop.
Fitting Laptop hard drives into a desktop
Most notebook hard drives use IDE and have a 2.5-inch IDE female connector. It's considerably smaller than the IDE plugs in your desktop system, and it carries power to the 2.5 inch drive. You'll need to purchase an adapter that converts this connector into the IDE 40 male connector that fits into most motherboards' IDE controllers and provides that power.
A standard desktop PC motherboard comes equipped with two IDE controllers. Each IDE controller can support two IDE devices (and a maximum of four without purchasing an additional IDE controller). The vast majority of desktop hard drives connect through an IDE connection. That means you'll need an extra PCI-based IDE adapter if you have more than four hard drives or CD-ROM drives inside your system
