Question : Problem: Backup Exec and Full Information Store Backup

I have a silly Backup Exec question.  This client of mine runs Veritas Backup Exec for Windows Servers 9.1, which I understand is a bit older.  I have just deleted a few mailboxes from Exchange 2003, and I notice that my retention settings for the Information Store state that nothing will be deleted until a full information store backup occurs.

My question is that when I look over selections in Backup Exec, I notice there are many items related to exchange that you can select.  For example you can select Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes (Which seem to give you the ability to restore brick level), you can select Microsoft Exchange Public folders, or you can select the Microsoft Information Store.  My backup jobs only have the Brick level option selected, and I am wondering if this will qualify for a full information store backup to the deletion policy?

In other words, do I have to select "Microsoft Information store" in order for these mailboxes to be deleted, or will simply having the "Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes" node selected suffice?  Separately will the System State also need to be backed up to satisfy this Information Store requirement?

Answer : Problem: Backup Exec and Full Information Store Backup

It is referring to a backup of the Information Store. A brick-level 'Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes' backup probably won't qualify for the setting you are referring to.

At this stage, you would want to seriously consider removing the Brick Level backup anyway, and performing an Information Store backup. Brick Level backups are an old, slow technology; a backup of the Information Store is faster and more reliable in the long run.
