Question : Problem: Use built-in motherboard RAID controller or Win XP Pro dynamic discs?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a qualified opinion regarding setup/creation of mirrored RAID arrays in desktop workstations.

Several of my office workstations have built in PATA or SATA RAID controllers (e.g., VIA, Highpoint). In addition, I do have a PATA (IDE) Promise RAID PCI card.

I also see that Win XP Pro allows you to create dynamic discs with mirroring directly through the OS.

Now, my question is, is it better or preferred to use Window's dynamic disc feature, or should or I stay with the third party RAID solutions?

No, it is generally a bad idea to use dynamic disks because many 3rd party utilities can't do anything with it. Also for raid using the controller rather than the windoze builtin raid is a lot better, as it is faster and more stable.
