Question : Problem: MBR on storage drive?

Is it nessasary to have a MBR on a mass storage drive and could this cause a conflict on bootup when it fails to find an OS on the storage drive.

Yes.  See the primary partition table here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_boot_record in the first list on the page.

Yes.  Depends on what type of conflict you are talking about.  You'll probably get a message about Operating System or NTLoader not found.
