Question : Problem: hardware transfer suggestions requested

I'm going to upgrade one computer whose operating system is Windows 98 to a new computer which is using windows XP. I am interested in finding out your suggestions as to how to create a successful transfer of data from the old computer to the new.

Any suggestions before or during or after the transfer are highly appreciated!
Thanks!

Answer : Problem: hardware transfer suggestions requested

to expand on the above, if you have built the XP computer already, go to
Start.. Programs.. Accesories.. System Tools, and click on the
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.  This can build a disk to initiate the transfer for you.

follow the onscreen prompts from there, specifying of course that the XP computer is the New one.

However, as a precaution, you should get a separate backup that is more accessible (and permanent)  than the single large file that this wizard will create.

I would suggest burning the following from the old PC to CD/DVD first:
-My Documents
-an email archive (most programs will at least export to a PST file, if they aren't in this format already)
-any Photos - the location of these can vary, so search for *.jpg
-music - ditto for mp3, etc.
-favourites
-any game save files.

I would also suggest using Belarc to audit the old pc - this will list hardware and software, and plenty of serial numbers.

Finally, adding the OLD hard disk as a slave to the new pc can be a useful way of copying files/quick access to that weird and wonderful file that you forgot you needed...
