Question : Problem: DELL INSPIRON 7500
|
|
On boot the display shows Microsoft Windows 98 copyright MS Corp 1981-1999 C:\>
and that is it. Windows never loads!!
The laptop used to run win98 and so i got hold of a Quick Boot CD which says win95, 98, ME & XP
Booting from this CD takes me to a Menu which says
MS windows 98 Startup Menu 1 Start Computer with CD ROM support 2. Start Computer without CD ROM support 3 View Help File
Choosing option 1 leads me to
Preparing to start computer This may take a few minutes.... The diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive D MSCDEX version 2.25 Copyright MS Corp 1986-1995 Drive E: Driver MSCD001 unit 0
To get help, type HELP and press ENTER A:\>
I was hoping that the CD would reinstall an OS. I have looked on the CD using another computer and it appears to have nothing on it.
On the laptop, if i do a DIR E: it shows no files found so it looks like the CD is empty?
How can I get this laptop going again? Is there a utility that would allow me to check what OS is suitable for this laptop?

These "multiboot" options would depend on the OS's that are to be installed. If they are all windows flavored OS then this guide should be helpful http://support.microsoft.com/kb/217210
If you are going to use Linux flavored OS or a mix of Linux and windows, you would install the Windows OS frst and then install the Linux OS and the Linux OS would usually have a bootloader option such as GRUB or LILO that will setup a multiboot system with the other linux or windows OS already on the system.
