Question : Problem: Cisco 7206 Card Usage for DS1 Access
|
|
This question relates to a similar post we had for creating a bonded DS1 circuit on a 7206. Again this question is of urgent nature.
We have a 7206 that we are going to sell DS1 access to, for connecting to the Internet. There seems to be some sort of debate on the correct card to use and how to program it. As a disclaimer, we already know that the best implementation would be a 24 or 12 port multiplexer going into a DS3, however for this 'trial' we're doing we have opted to purchase a 4 port T1 Port Adapter card for the 7206.
The objective: We order loops from the LEC, those loops get terminated into NIUs at both points, point Z being the customer and point A being our datacenter. The 7206 sits in the datacenter, figure the rest. We're running IOS 12.2(t), BGP connections to the rest of the world. The CPE is a 1720 with an integrated CSU/DSU T1 WIC.
The way we assumed this would work, is that we get a multi-port T1 card for the 7206, establish point to point WAN connections between the WIC card on a 1720 and a port on the 7206, toss in some routing and bam we've got a connection to the Internet.
We purchased a PA-MC-4T, which has 4 DS1, RJ48 type connections. Keeping in mind this is supposed to be a simple, Internet connection not worrying about later QoS or anything else, no reason to consider voice and data on the same line.
We put the MC-4T into the 7206 and the 4 port card appears as Controllers and not Interfaces, so we have no way of assigning IP addresses as we thought we could. We tried checking out Cisco's site, but the best we can come up with is that the 24 timeslots on the port have to be configured as a serial interface, but we can't seem to find any reasonable steps to do that.
The Question: A) Did we throw an air ball and purchase the wrong card entirely, if so, what's the right one. B) If this card works, how the heck do we configure it to accomplish what we're trying to do.
We understand this question is being posted late on a Friday, but we'll all be watching it intently over the weekend to answer any questions anyone has to help get this ironed out, so if you need more info please ask with anticipation that it will be answered quickly. Thanks a lot in advance!

You can test without the NIU - just make a T1 crossover cable...
End A = standard CAT5, TIA/EIA 568B Orange/white Orange Green/white Blue Blue/white Green Brown/white Brown
End B = swap blue and orange pair Blue/white Blue Green/white Orange Orange/white Green Brown/white Brown
