Question : Problem: Driver not found for digital camera's memory when connected via USB

We are running Windows XP Home and have just purchased a Panasonic DMC FX55 camera.
When you connect the device to the PC via USB, the new hardware wizard pops up as usual and asks if you want to install automatically or specify a location for the driver.
No matter which option you choose, a driver is not found.
Checking the manufacturer documentation, it confirms that no actual driver should be required and that the standard windows XP mass storage driver should do the trick.
But it doesn't.
I wonder if there is a registry setting or something which stops the computer connecting to the internet (windows update) to look for drivers for the device?
Can anyone help with this problem? I really dont want to have to wipe the PC - it's a Dell Dimension machine and is not very old.
Many Thanks.
