Question : Problem: CIH Bios recovery, please help!
|
|
Here is a CIH victim! my brother computer got attacked by this evil stupid virus last april. He said that he turned on the computer and it didn't boot to the OS(win98), So he tried to reinstall win98 but the computer hanged in the middle of the process(don't remember exactly) and after a cold shutdown, the pc won't boot to anything at all, I think he said there was a beep but no monitor display!
it's clear that CIH flashed the bios with crap and it no longer has the preloaded information about the motherboard..etc and it won't boot as a result. I read somewhere that you can fix this by using another bios chip to boot up the pc and then replace it with the erased bios and reload the bios with data using a floppy with data from the manufactuer. my bro has an atx mobo(don't know the model) and celeron 300MHz
he want his computer to be fixed as soon as possible, so i need a complete solution from an expert on this bios recovery thing. walk me through the process step by step. I don't believe he should get a new bios, i just think he could do what i mentioned above.(the bios chip is replacable
does the new bios has to be exactlly the same in order to boot the machine? can he get a bios from an almost similar mobo?
please mention any bit you know.. tell me if you need additional information

This is the last time I'll explain. You COULD do what you defined, but there's no real way of determining if you hosed the flashing process or not. Also, some boards feature eeprom chips and not flash rom. Make sure both are of the same type. If they're both made by Winbond, chances are they are both flash rom. The difference is that eeprom cannot be programmed by the user. As for the price of a BIOS, it's about $100, and you must give them specific details of your motherboard, so they can dig up the right BIOS file to load up. It's because of having to search the archives that makes it cost so mouch to replace a rom unless it's a recently manufactured board. Plus, most suppliers don't sell to individuals anyways.
