Question : Problem: why does my sound play kinda choppy? audio speakers

Ok so when i start up my windows the start up sound plays choppy,  and when i attempt to play mp3's they also play choppy. The computer im using is 3 ghz and has a gig of ram.   So im not sure what the problem is.  but are there any suggestions?

In desktops there could be a background program running that is using resources that would cause choppy sound. Go into task manager and see what the CPU utilization looks like under the processes tab. Are there any that are showing high CPU usage(except for the System Idle Process)
