Question : Problem: All USB ports quit recognizing plugged-in hardware

Hello,

All USB ports quit recognizing plugged-in hardware. Keyboard, scanner and joystick.

My USB ports worked fine for many years. For no apparent reason they quit working.

Under Device Manager
Universal Serial Bus controllers
Intel 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller  and  USB Root Hub
Device Status =   This device is working properly.

Plugging in joystick shows Human Interface Device in Device Manager, not correct model info.
So Im thinking the USB port hardware is physically working, since joystick shows incorrect info?
Scanner and keyboard show nothing.

These are the trouble shooting steps I have done:

Disabled USB in Bios.
Uninstalled All USB items in Device Manager.

Deleted all references to any usb device in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBSTOR

Also deleted same from:      controlset001   and    controlset002

Rebooted and enabled USB in BIOS.
Let WinXP redetect and install drivers.
Plugged-in USB devices and selected  Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager.

None of these steps helped. Any ideas for me to try next?

Thanks for the help,  Marc

Answer : Problem: All USB ports quit recognizing plugged-in hardware

if it is recent, you can try a system restore to a previous date.
you can also test the usb ports by running from a knoppix cd :
