Question : Problem: 500GB drives on ASUSrock 775i65G motherboard
|
|
I have a 775i65G motherboard and I recently bought a WD 500GB IDE drive for it. When I went to format it I could not create any partitions in the usual way with Administration tools/Computer managegment/Disk Management option in Windows XPpro. Instead ot the layout and type set to Partition and Basic this drive has the layout and type set to SIMPLE and DYNAMIC. What does this mean to the me the user in day to day usage of this drive. Will I have problems when I get a newer motherboard? Does this MB have a cap on the limit ot the drive size? Any pros or cons on this type of setup? Can I create multiple logical drives? I don't want 500GB as one drive. and lastly why does the system recognise 465,76GB only?

Dynamic and Simple layout: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457110.aspx I think that document explaint it WAY more thougougly then i ever could :)
>>> And lastly why does the system recognise 465,76GB only? There is a different between the MARKETING size, and the COMPUTER size. In order to make the calculations easy marketeers use 1000 MB/GB instead of the correct 1024MB/GB. The marketing numbers are placed on the box, so if they promise you 80 gigabyte you will just get 80.000 megabyte, while normally 80 gigabyte would equal 81920 megabytes. The computer works with the COMPUTER size instead of the marketing size, so your harddisk is actually smaller then the size on the box by (24mb*number_Of_Gigabytes_Listed). In your case 500*24 would end up being about 11 gigabytes less. The rest is most likely caused by disk overhead. However, this kind of "Loss" is fully normal, and exists on all harddisks (My own 400 gig shows up as being 376-ish)
With kind regards, ~Irial
