Question : Problem: Large HDD on Win98, freeze when deleting large file or create new folder

I am administering a few Win98 systems in a small office and have just replaced the HDD with a large HDD (10GB over).

I notices that after deleting a large file (say hundreds of MB), and the delete activity dialog box has disappeared, Win98 froze for less than one minute.

The same thing happens if I create a new folder, or rename a folder.

Win98 was clean installed, some are patched with the latest security updates, some are just test machines without updates, all behaving the same way with large size HDD. The HDD cable is the new one, Mother boards support 66/100/133, so there seem no hardware problem there. The HDD is not fully used (less than 10%), already use scan disk, and defrag, no problem shown.

It happens regardless of whether the HDD is fully populated with application software or without any software installed.

Does Win98 have a limitation in the size of the HDD it can handle efficiently?

After I reboot the PC, it does not happen in a short time, but it will happen.

Have anyone come across this problem?

Regards,

AYam

Answer : Problem: Large HDD on Win98, freeze when deleting large file or create new folder

It does happen in winxp. On some kt133 motherboards files larger than about 30MB are corrupted when copied. The same mobo had the problem with old via drivers under win98se, and the problem was solved by updating via drivers. There is no solution under winxp.
