Question : Problem: Difference nVIDIA RAID and Silicon Image SATARAID5
Hi, I just put together a computer and I would like to install OS. Before instaling OS i am trying to configure RAID(first time configuring RAID). I have MSI K8N Neo4 motherbord with 8 Serial ATA/ contectors. My question is what is the difference between the two RAID - nVIDIA and Silicon image RAID. Which is better? .. and if i am correct some of the serial ATA/conectors are designed for nVIDIA RAID and others for Silicon image RAID, why? Thank's

NV RAID (Software) Supports up to 4 SATA and 4 ATA133 Hard drives - RAID 0 or 1, 0+1, JBOD is supported - RAID function available for ATA133+SATA H/D drives if you want to make raid with ata drives use the nvidia raid controller, you can make raid 0 -stripped,quick but not secure raid 1 -mirroring,secure but much more slowlier raid 0+1 - combination of the both previos two, JBOD-just a bunch of disks read this:http://www.bytepile.com/raid_class.php http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/raid/levels/jbod.htm also the nvraid supports sata II ,so up to 300MB/s data transfer
Silicon Image's SATARAID5 (Software) RAID 0 or 1, RAID5, RAID10, and JBOD groups are supported Support up to 4 SATA devices connected to a single controller it's only for s-ata drives but from what i know silicon image makes the best controllers for s-ata and s-ata raid solutions and supports only s-ata I up to 150MB/s,theoretically much slowlier ,but i'm not quite sure what kind of performance and stability this controller is able to show, perhaps it's better than the nvidia one,cuz s-ata II is still no standart, all th especs are theoretical values, which doesn't mean that this expresses the reality both of th e controllers can do raid0 ,raid 1,raid 1+0 so if you want to go for s-ata it's upto you which controller you will choose
