Question : Problem: Bare Metal Recovery: Backup Exec IDR vs Disk Imaging products

Has anyone had experience with both the IDR option built into Backup Exec 11d and server disk imaging products like Symantec System Recovery or Acronis True Image Server, which use disk imaging technology.  We currently have 11d and trying to decide whether to use the IDR option for bare metal recovery, or whether there is significant benefit to a product like Acronis over Backup Exec IDR to justify spending more money.  Thanks.

Answer : Problem: Bare Metal Recovery: Backup Exec IDR vs Disk Imaging products

I've used the Symantec Backup Exec system recovery edition a number of times, particularly to migrate servers from one old server to another. I prefer it to the IDR solution as its pretty quick, and performs quite well.

The only dramas I've had with it is that you may need to upgrade the network drivers on the new image to make it work correctly (particularly with Broadcom cards). You would also have to reactivate windows if you are using an OEM version going to new hardware.

I've used it about four times in this scenario and it works pretty well
