OK, there is an easy and cheap way for you to do this. Both Win98 and 3.1 come with a utility called 'Hyperterminal'. All you need is a null modem cable and a serial port on each machine. You can either make or buy a null modem cable. If you happen to have a standard serial port cable (the kind that goes to a normal external modem) you can modify it easily to be a null modem cable. This page tells the wiring: http://www.indiacam.net/pinout/ Section 4 shows how the pins are numbered and section 8 shows how to wire up a null modem cable.
Plug the resulting cable into a free serial port on each machine. Make sure said port is properly enabled in BIOS and is not conflicting with anything else. Run Hyperterminal on each machine. It will default to any installed modems, so select the com port in question instead. Select the port speed as 112,000. Tell one to 'call' the other via null modem. Then just use Hyperterminal's ZModem under "File Transfer" to transfer files. From the laptop, tell ZModem to recieve first. Then from the desktop, tell it to send. ZModem does batches, so you can select a bunch of files to send while you go get a coffee. If there are errors during transfer, lower the com port speed by one increment until you find the max good speed.
The alternative is to use LapLink over the parallel port. PPort is a little faster, so on really large transfers the difference will add up. With an 80MB drive on the laptop, I don't think this is an issue, but it's up to you: http://www.laplink.com That same page above gives instructions on wiring up a LapLink cable for the parallel ports. Hyperterminal does not work over parallel port, that's why you need to get the LapLink (or similar) software.
