Question : Problem: Problems connecting XP machine to Apple Airport Express wireless network
|
|
I've recently setup a wireless home network using an Apple Airport Express base station. There are several machines that can connect to the network at any given time, including two macs and upto four pcs.
I'm finding that one of the PCs is having difficulty connecting and staying connected to the network. The computer frequently disconnects from the network, often within only a few minutes of connecting. Sometimes when this happens it's difficult to reconnect again, in that I'll attempt to connect but as the machine attempts to connect the message "Waiting for the network" is displayed below the progress bar. After some minutes of this, the progress window closes but the machine didn't manage to connect. No error message is displayed. On other occasions, I'm given the option of repairing the network connection, which sometimes gets me connected again.
I wondered if I might have a faulty wireless card, since that turned out to be the cause of a similar problem in a different machine not to long ago. However, it appeared to be working fine recently when the PC was elsewhere and connected to a different network. The signal strength generally seems to be at about 2 bars, but the iMac next to the problematic XP machine seems to be able to connect without problem, as does an XP laptop at the same location.
Any suggestions as to how to go about troubleshooting and/or fixing this problem would be most appreciated.

How far away are these machines form the Wireless AP, it may be an issue with interference or signal loss;
Try moving one of yours to where this PC is temporarily; if it suffers similar issues you may wish to invest in a higher-gain antenna for the PC Wireless card, or possibly a second Airport-Express basestation to act as a relay.
