Question : Problem: svchost.exe using 100% CPU

Svchost.exe (PID 1332) uses 100% CPU when I have any dealings with Microsoft Updates.
I have turned off 'Automatic Updates' but the problem still appears, and can last as long as 20 min, during which the computer is effectively locked.
I am using a Sony Vaio PCV-RX1, Windows XP-SP2, Internet Explorer 7+, 768Mb Ram.
Have you heard of this or have you a fix?
