Question : Problem: Epson 480 printer communication error

I have a client with an epson 480 printer and windows 98 that will no longer print. It returns a communication error when status monitor is started. I have removed the drivers AND the lpt port and reinstalled but no good. It wouldn't print from dos either. I have added a port lpt.dos and printed the word test from notepad okay so that suggests a cable or port problem. I have tried the printer on another machine (win xp pro) and it works perfect so the problem is inside the computer. I don't want to have to do a full system reinstall if there is a simple solution within the software. There is a USB scanner installed. Does anyone have any suggestions that may help?
