Question : Problem: Why are Macs the industry standard for graphics designers?

Lets not start a big flame war here, but I have a quick question.

In the field of graphics design, Macs seem to be the industry standard. I'm interested in knowing why. Besides the regular claims of less crashing, less viruses, and price. These are all subjective claims that we can argue about forever and I'm not interested in going into that.

I ask because I have some home made windows-specific input devices which I heavily rely on. And I want to know what I'm missing out on by not using a Mac for my work.

So... what specific features / abilities do macs have to aid graphics designers that a windows PC lack?

Answer : Problem: Why are Macs the industry standard for graphics designers?

Everything I've seen, Macs are not better - they are equal.  In past years, Apple has shown some fancy stats CLAIMING that a Mac can render pictures and the like considerably faster than PCs... but what they don't tell you - and what I want to see before I believe such claims - is the configuration of both systems. Apple may well be optimizing the Mac and ignoring the PC other than running the apps.

I believe they are dominant right now because of the 80s when Windows still hadn't figured out how to create a proper GUI and Mac had been using MacOS.  They had a head start and a Macs got the reputation in the 80s for being better at graphics.  Now, people who don't know better still think that's true.... yet with all the apps, cores, 64 bit, SSD, RAM, etc technology that exists today, I can't believe they aren't roughly equal.

Sorry, I haven't any more specific knowledge... and believe it or not, I do RESPECT Macs, especially since they finally developed an OS based on BSD.  But to me, they've been lucky - they've reinvented the OS twice and the CPU three times (Motorola 680x0, PowerPC, and now x86).  IF I'm a mac user for a long time, that frustrates me.
