Hello:
At home I have a macintosh G4 desktop and a new Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. I
can successfully "wake" my mac from sleep mode and remote control it using VNC,
but I can't get the same setup to work properly on the laptop. I am able to
wake my my mac from sleep mode and remote control the desktop remotely by doing
the following:
1. I send a "wake on lan" signal to my mac over the internet from my work
Windows 98 machine using WakeOnLanGui
2. I then establish a secure "tunnel" to my mac using OpenSSH which is built
into the Mac OS X system software, forwarding a local port on my work PC to
port 5900 on my mac. I use Putty to establish the
tunnel.
3. I then use the UltraVNC viewer to establish a VNC session through the SSH
"tunnel" to my mac running OS X VNC, giving me remote control of the desktop.
I can get this exact same system to work with my Dell laptop, so long as I
don't have to wake it up. I can establish a tunnel through to the
laptop via SSH running on my mac and then start the VNC session through the
tunnel.
The problem is, when I put the laptop into Standby mode, and then wake it up
using WakeOnLanGUI, the screen stays black, despite the fact that the laptop is
definately "awake" (the hard drive is spinning, etc.). Logging on through VNC
then results in just a black screen and cursor. Moving the cursor via VNC has
no effect on the screen. Only when I physically move the mouse via the
trackpad or USB mouse directly hooked up to the laptop does the screen turn on,
and VNC becomes usable.
Obviously I don't want to have to keep my laptop on at home at all times in order to access it remotely. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the screen to come on without having to actually move the mouse or trackpad? I imagine this is some sort of safety feature built in to the laptop to prevent it from coming on "in my bag," but I'm hoping there is a way to disable this.
