Question : Problem: Netmeeting Configuration help
|
|
HElp! please help me set up netmeeting so i can be at home and have someone anywhere open netmeeting and call me, then i take over their computer through share a program, allow control. When i open the program and have the other user open the program and attempt to call me, they get an error message, "the person you called is not able to accept Netmeeting calls". The user and i both have our firewalls off, i am behind a modem/router provided by Verizon -Westell versalink 327w. I tried going to the configuration for services menu for my modem/router and enabled a service named netmeeting and associated portforwarding to my computer. What am i missing??? (besides a brain?) please advise. So many people need help, so little time.

I would try putting your computer/ipaddress in the DMZ settings.
When you use a DSL modem, typicall all of the computers on the LAN side (your home or office) are protected via various security measures. Anyone from the outside can only see the modem.
However, a computer in the DMZ is connected to the modem, but it is not protected by any of the security measures enacted by the modem (hence the term DMZ).
When you use connect to the internet, your computer is basically left to fend for itself and use software protection like Windows Firewall, etc. So likewise, a computer in the DMZ would also have to rely on Windows firewall, which just so happens to also know about NetMeeting and will probably let it operate with no fuss.
So what I think you need to do is the following; In the modem setup, find the DMZ setting and put in the IP address of your computer into it.
Now when your DSL modem connects you to the internet, you are not standing behind any of the modem's security features and everything should work. But remember, only Windows firewall stands between you and the cold, cruel world. You may want to remove yourself from the DMZ once you have finished a netmeeting session.
