Question : Problem: Acquiring Network Address with Secure Wireless Router
|
|
I have used an unsecured wireless network at home for some time (using a Edimax AR-7024wg router) but this needs boosting. I have bought a Belkin Wireless G Range extender to do this. I thought I should first secure the network using WPA. Having done this I have had one of our two laptops connected but with the continual message "Accquiring Network Address". When I insert an IP address manually it keeps dropping the connection. Any advice please?

Sorry I had automatically assumed you were already trying out the range expander.
I'd like you to try working back a bit. Seeing that the wireless cards aren't getting an IP, can you try a direct connection to the router via cable? Just to ensure that DHCP is actually working.
Once that's confirmed, remove the security and verify you can still connect to the unsecure network. If yes, then try with another encryption method e.g. WEP (just as a trial).. If this works, then you may need to update the drivers of your wireless card to the latest version that should support WPA encryption. Hopefully these drivers are available..
