Question : Problem: How to change the password of an ESX user via the console screen

I have access to the ESX server console screen.
I have the root login credentials
I'm unable to login via the VI client so need to login on the console screen
Once i've logged in how do I change another users password please?

login as root
type:

passwd
prompted for new password
prompted to verify password

When you are typing the password in the cursor does not move or display any characters.
