Question : Problem: XP Pro Laptop freezes ramdomly

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 IntelDC 2.0Ghz 3 GB Ram, XP Pro SP3 and all windows updates current. It will completly freeze randomly (I have to do a hard reboot to get the machine back up). I can not find a software link as it has frozen on me while surfing the web, while in Photoshop CS3, while tranfering data to an external drive, while burning a cd, and has even happened when I have left the machine without any programs running and come back to it. It has froze both when external devices are attached and when they are not, and when it is plugged in to AC power and when it is running on the battery. I assumed it was a RAM issue so I ran Windows Memery dianostic and had no errors. There is nothing in the Event Log to indicate a problem.. I need some suggestions where to go.. The warrentee expired 6 month ago...

Well will it take more than a week to reintall? due to spending the last 6 days on fixing this problem it may be the best choice due to the weird symptoms. You computer is giving heat related reactions to a software problem which is lame. So, my advice (based on nothing more than a random gut feeling) is to do just that, backup and redo it.
