Question : Problem: Need to make internal HDD into external USB -- exactly what enclosure will work with my ST380011A Seagate Barracuda?

Greetings,

I need to make my Seagate Barracuda ST 380011A HDD into an external drive. It is currently a 'slave' on an old computer, want to use it as external drive on new computer. This HDD will temporarily be used as external drive. Soon thereafter, however, it will need to be replaced in external USB 'enclosure' with an ST3120026A HDD, which is currently the C: drive on old computer. The ST380011A drive will then become 2nd internal HDD on a new computer.

I am a hardware & OS ignoramus, and need to know exactly what type of 'enclosure' or 'cradle' will work with both of these two particular drives. Looking for quality at reasonable price.

Will also need expert guidance, simply stated in non-geek speak, how to get ST 380011A HDD out of old computer and into USB enclosure so that it WORKS. Then, how to get it into new computer so that it WORKs. Then, how to get ST3120026A HDD out of old computer and into 'enclosure' so that it too WORKs.

Will have to wait until enclosure unit arrives, help with setting things up, before points are awarded.

This is probably not difficult, but it is urgent. Thanks.

regards,

stevenjs

you need a 3.5" ide enclosure like this one :  http://www.directron.com/me525u2f.html
>>  how to get ST 380011A HDD out of old computer and into USB enclosure  <<   open pc, disconnect cables from slave drive, remove fixing screws, check that it is set to /Master (see link below)
and mount into enclosure.
connect cables in the enclosure, connect and power up.

the same applies to the other disk (do not forget to jumper correct !)
