Question : Problem: Fix my itunes library

We copied all of our folders and mp3 files to a Seagate External backup drive to have everything in a centralized location.

I want to be able to have Itunes reference the files on the external usb hard drive. I do not want the files copied from my external usb hard drive back to my c: drive.

Itunes Version: 8.0.0.35

Can I simply reference the files on the USB Hard Drive.

I exported the playlist to my desktop.

Itunes library and xml files have been deleted.

Also, is there an alternative software other than using Itunes that would still allow me to play my licensed mp3 files.
