Question : Problem: INCREASE COMPUTER SPEED WITH MEMORY NOT CPU

I HAVE THE FOLLOWING SYSTEM.

ASUS MOTHERBOARD : M2NPV-VM
AMD CPU : ATHLON 64 - 3800+ 2.41GHZ
MEMORY : 1GB - KINGSTON # KVR533D2N4/1G  [ SS SIDE WHATEVER THAT MEANS ]  [ APPROVED BY ASUSMOTHERBOARD TESTING ]
OPERATING SYSTEM: WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL WITH SP3

I WANT TO INCREASE SPEED WITHOUT CHANGING THE AMD CPU.
I FOUND THE ASUS APPROVED SPECS FOR THIS BOARD.

IT APPROVES THE FOLLOWING:
1GB KINGSTON # KVR800D2N5/1G FOR ALL 4 SLOTS IN THE BOARD [ DS SIDES ? ]

IF I INCREASE THE MEMORY TO 4GB [ 4 INDIVIDUAL STICKS AS LISTED ABOVE ]
WILL THIS INCREASE THE SPEED OF THE COMPUTER AS FAR AS WORKING IN PROGRAMS
FROM A SERVER SUCH AS WINDOWS OFFICE, INTERNET, ETC. ?

OR DO I HAVE TO INCREASE THE CPU SIZE AS WELL.

WHICH WOULD BE FASTER?
INCREASE THE MEMORY ONLY WITH 4GB
OR
INCREASE THE MEMORY TO 2GB WITH A ATHLON 64X2 5000+ 2.6 GHZ

I HATE TO UPGRADE THE CPU IF I DO NOT NEED TO.

JUST FISHING FOR YOUR THOUGHTS

THANKS

Answer : Problem: INCREASE COMPUTER SPEED WITH MEMORY NOT CPU

If you are not using 64 bit XP, then it will only be able to use about 3GB. You can install 4GB or whatever the motherboard will hold, but Windows will only be able to work with around 3. Upgrading from 1GB to 4GB will give you a decent boost, but no way it will be better than upgrading to 2GB + the CPU upgrade you mention.
