The USB adapter would let you connect the SATA drive to a USB port on your computer, then it would show up as another hard drive to Windows and could be scanned/repaired. Most of the USB to SATA adapters on Newegg also do IDE to SATA too. They're good adapters to have around, and probably will be more useful to you later on than the SATA to IDE adapter that will probably just be used this once.
